Invisalign Straightened My Teeth! What Comes Next?

You’ve finally done it. Thanks to Invisalign clear aligners, your smile is now perfectly straight. So, what comes next? You can just rest back on your laurels and enjoy the simple pleasure of having flawless teeth, right?

Not quite! To maintain the results of your treatment, you’ll have to wear some type of retainer – an oral device designed to keep your teeth from sliding back into crooked positions. Keep reading, and you’ll learn everything you need to know!

Type 1: Removable Retainers

As the name implies, removable retainers can be easily removed at your convenience. Based on your needs and preferences, you might receive:

• Vivera – Designed by Align Technology, these retainers resemble your Invisalign orthodontic trays. They’re a bit pricier than other options, but are more durable and will generally last longer.
• Standard clear – A.k.a. Essix retainers, these also look and fit like a set of Invisalign. Basically, they’re the budget version of Vivera.
• Hawley – Instead of clear plastic, Hawley retainers are made of a clear plastic base and a metal wire. The device will rest behind your teeth, but the wire will also wrap over the front of your pearly whites.

For some patients, wearing a removable type retainer at night is all it takes to maintain their even smile. Others might need a fixed type retainer – or a combination of both!

Type 2: Fixed Retainers

Fixed retainers cannot be removed. Fortunately, they only consist of a thin metal wire cemented to the back of your teeth. They’re not visible to onlookers, and after you get used to their presence, you’ll hardly notice them. In some ways, that makes them even more convenient than removable retainers!

How Long Will I Have to Wear a Retainer?

You’ll likely have to wear a retainer for the rest of your life. However, how often you have to wear one each day can vary. Some patients, for example, start out wearing them 24/7, then transition into nightly wear only, and then inserting them just every other night or so. It all depends on your unique oral situation, so be sure to check with your dentist! They’ll be more than happy to help you “retain” your Invisalign orthodontic results.
